About Alex

As a kid, Alex begged to be a drummer…

When Alex was five years old, he stumbled upon a snare drum and a pair of drum sticks at his older cousin’s house. That day, he received his first drum lesson. His cousin taught him double stroke rolls — “mama papa, mama papa.” Soon after, Alex’s eyes lit up as he entered a music shop for the first time. He walked away from the room full of drums and cymbals with his first pair of sticks. That evening, while tapping along to a Motown song, lightening struck! Alex realized he was a drummer!

Alex began begging his parents for a drum kit, and they tried their best to hold him off. First they got him bongos, and he played them non-stop (he still plays them today). Then they got him an electric drum set, and he proceeded to play it daily until it stopped working. Finally, when he was 12-years-old, Alex had shown them he was serious by improving his grades, and he finally got his first drum kit.

In no time, Alex began performing in his church choir and playing in his first band. He also began taking lessons and impressing his drum teacher with his quick skill building. A year later, Alex joined his high school drumline. He played every percussion instrument he could get his hands on — from lead snare to xylophone.

In college, Alex began playing professionally in bands and performing all over San Francisco. Since then, Alex has played with numerous acts, across a wide range of musical styles. Alex has recorded many EPs and several full length albums. He has also worked as a session musician, transcribing and learning exact drum parts for performance or studio work.

As a drum instructor, Alex brings all of that passion, knowledge, and experience to his students. He aims to tap into their musical potential by showing them how to express themselves musically on the drum kit.
